Nick Hannes (°1974, Antwerpen) studeerde fotografie aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (KASK) in Gent. De laatste jaren legt hij zich volledig toe op zijn persoonlijk artistieke praktijk. Zijn werk is documentair en maatschappijkritisch, en heeft een sterk sociaal-politieke inslag. Gebruikmakend van humor, ironie en visuele metaforen richt hij zich op de problematische relatie van de mens met zijn omgeving.

Garden of Delight is een project over entertainment, consumentisme en marktgedreven urbanisatie in Dubai. De reeks schetst Dubai als de ultieme speeltuin van globalisering en kapitalisme, en roept vragen op omtrent authenticiteit en duurzaamheid. Succesverhaal of grootheidswaanzin? Dubai's snelle transformatie van een stoffig vissersdorp in de jaren 60 tot de hypermoderne metropolis vandaag, fascineert vriend en vijand. Dubai is het typevoorbeeld van een ongebreidelde urbanisatie die niet organisch verloopt, maar het resultaat is van markt-gerelateerde mechanismen, prestigedrang en doorgedreven consumentisme. Ook al komt de hele wereld naar Dubai, de etnische mix levert geen multiculturele maatschappij op.

Garden of Delight won de Magnum Photography Award in 2017 en de Zeiss Photography Award in 2018.

Rooftop Garden

Rooftop Garden is the first comprehensive look at green rooftops around the world and is indispensable for designers, landscape architects, and anybody interested in gardens and leisure spaces. As cities continue to grow, making large expanses of street level real estate less readily available, many creative contemporary designers see rooftop green spaces as a unique solution for urban leisure and rejuvenation. Elevated green roofs eliminate city and traffic noise, provide better air quality, and allow for amazing panoramic views of the city. The large scale projects in Rooftop Garden span the globe and have a variety of functions, from luxury restaurants and hotels to business meeting rooms. Design considerations include the weight of materials, site dimensions, materials, climate, seasonality of foliage, irrigation systems, insulation, day and night lighting conditions, and the colors of the plants from above during every season. Beautifully photographed and immediately engaging, featured spaces include a rooftop swimming pool that appears to drop abruptly off the side of a Singapore skyscraper hotel and the New York Museum of Modern Art’s “American style zen roof garden” made out of recycled materials. Fully illustrated with over 500 color photos, vertical scale diagrams, and floor plans.

Droomtuinen

Voor Droomtuinen bezocht Claire Takacs over de hele wereld de 68 tuinen die zij het mooist vindt. Deze fotografeerde ze in het beste seizoen op hun hoogtepunt. Het boek is een persoonlijke reis, waarin Takacs beschrijft waar de ontwerpers hun inspiratie vandaan haalden, de achterliggende ideeën en hoe de tuinen tot stand zijn gekomen. De selectie van tuinen is heel divers. Er worden klassiek aangelegde tuinen belicht, zoals het prachtige Bryan's Ground in Herefordshire (in Edwardiaanse stijl), en de Kenrokuen, een van de meest exclusieve publieke tuinen in Japan. Maar ook experimentele tuinen komen uitgebreid aan bod, zoals Hermannshof in Duitsland. Andere iconische tuinen die worden beschreven zijn: Dyffryn Fernant (Wales), Cloudehill (Australië), Skylands, Martha Stewart's prive landgoed (Verenigde Staten), de naturalistische Franse tuin Le Jardin Plume (Normandië), en natuurlijk de tuinen van Piet Oudolf (Nederland). Bekende landschapsarchitecten als Brandon Tyson, Paul Bangay en Fernando Martos laten ook hun tuinen zien.
