Bij een zaagmolen op een heuvel met sparren en dennen volgt een zoon stilzwijgend het voorbeeld van zijn vader, zoals dat al generaties lang gebeurt. Hij zaagt bomen tot planken en zorgt voor veel nageslacht. Verder bemoeit hij zich nergens mee. Want vrede wordt altijd voorgoed gesloten, maar duurt zelden langer dan een paar jaar. Een voor een vertrekken de zonen uit het dal. De jongste, Zlatomir, blijft achter. Hij is bang om een ander mens te worden als hij de heuvel over gaat. Maar dan steekt er een venijnige oostenwind op. De tuinman van niemandsland bezit alle eigenschappen van een modern sprookje: poëtisch, wreed en geboetseerd naar een realiteit die we maar al te goed herkennen.

This place seems like a exact place to die for Don Vito Corleone, as it has been mentioned in the previous paragraph that oranges may signify the Sicily region, therefore we can understand before he, Don Vito, starts choking and throwing himself on the ground, Anthony has asked him “where are you”, which is the last diction he can ever talk to his grandfather.
