Did Popeye Have the Right Idea? Is Eating Spinach Good For You?
Spinach and Your Body
Popeye will turn 93 years old on December 19th of this year. And because of spinach, there’s no doubt that he’ll be alive and well for that birthday. Eating spinach improves cardiovascular health. Its antioxidant properties help prevent the harmful oxidation of cholesterol. Oxidized cholesterol is extremely dangerous to your heart and arteries. And thanks to its magnesium levels, spinach can lower high blood pressure levels in a matter of a few hours. In addition, spinach prevents the occurrence of strokes! A single serving of spinach contains 65% of your daily need of folate. Folate converts harmful, stroke-inducing chemicals in to wimpy nothings.
Spinach and Your Mind
At times it could often seem like Popeye is uneducated, but look closer and you’ll see he comes up with solutions to problems that seem impossible. How is he able to do this? You guessed it! Spinach!!! This leafy green is great for protecting your brain function from premature aging and slows old age’s negative effects on mental capabilities. It does this by blocking the harmful effects of oxidation on your brain.
Though his general idea of eating spinach is on point, Popeye did get one thing wrong about his spinach consumption—it wasn’t fresh! He always cracked open a can of spinach. If you want to reap all the real benefits of spinach, you have to eat it fresh! Although canned is okay, it won’t get you nearly as far as the fresh version from the produce section. But this little hiccup isn’t enough to fault Popeye—after all, he’s still made eating spinach look cool.
